No words can describe this legendary piece of art so i will just say, batman fans or frank miller fans... Buy it, £8.99 is a steal considering i paid £35 for 300.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking story by Miller, shame about the artwork!

Okay, so i've not given 5 stars for what many people consider as the finest batman comic of all time! Sorry, but compared to my favourites like year one, the long halloween, dark victory, the killing joke, even miller's own all star batman and robin, this visually just doesn't compare! Then again, jim lee did do the artwork for all star!

I understand that dkr is a benchmark in terms of miller's approach to revitalising batman's image and credibility, but lynn varley's artwork looks patchy and ugly at times. Varley worked with miller on the brilliant "300", one of the greatest non character graphic novels of all time, but the same visual approach to dkr doesn't quite work. I would have loved to have seen miller's story with someone like tim sale or jim lee for dkr, it would then have the visuals to back up a fascinating story.

On the major plus front however, miller's portrayal of batman is truly brilliant. Old, battered and retired, miller's dark knight feels compelled to return after seeing gotham's crimewave steadily accelerate since hanging up his cowl. The story also builds to a climatic showdown between bats and a certain man of steel, superman believing batman's nonchalent and nihlistic attitude towards criminals endanger the whole superhero taskforce. But even this revelation may annoy some fans, this is a batman story after all, does superman really have to make an appearance? Doesn't it become an elseworlds story rather than a pure interpretation of the batman? Anyway, despite these niggles, i'm sure there are many of you that will love dkr, and so they should, its miles better than other graphic novels out there!

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars The best Batman graphic novel

I won't deny Year One is brilliant but this just edges it for me, a truly brilliant story with amazing art, not as dark as "Arkham Asylum" but it stays with you for weeks, I hope a film is made of this away from the Nolan verse.

It is between this and Watchmen for my favourite ever but I'm still a novice in graphic novels I reccomend this if you like Batman and want a place to start with graphic novels.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars As good as I remember

The release of the new edition prompted me to dust off and rediscover the Dark Knight Returns after over 10 years. Theres always a risk that nostalgia ain't what it used to be but... in this case it certainly is. Recommended to anyone who thinks they're too old for comics.

Millers Batman is enbued with all the fears and doubts of growing old and seeing the world around him changing and being able to do nothing about it. All the familiar villans are here but they have an even darker side much like our hero.

Even Superman is now an agent of the Government ..

Please read this even if you have never though of touching a comic book..

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars In a word... Amazing

I was excited to read this as I was a massive fan of Frank Millers narrative style in the film Sin City, and a massive film of old American film noir. Also I loved Batman Begins, If anyone can relate then I would recommend that you read this. It's not a long read. I never once put it down.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning

Fantastic writing and artwork that just fits the story so so well. The charcterisation of the Joker is superb and it this could be one of the best insights into Superman too.....though I won't spoil it for those who have not yet read it. Buy this now.

I've got the 1986 version of this book and read it ages ago. It is still fresh in my mind 'cause the storytelling is so good.
It's a wonderful turn on the normal stories of Batman and his enemies throwing them into old age and the inherent vulnerabilities of aching bones etc.
Batman tries to remain as strong as ever throughout even when he faces much more superior enemies.
A great graphic novel that, if you like Batman, you will definately enjoy.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Sublime

Its easy to throw around the phrase "the greatest ever..." but The Dark Knight Returns is easily the Citizen Kane of graphic novels. A true masterpiece whose only rival is the equally brilliant Watchmen.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars it's BATMAN!
